What is Xovoltib 50 mg Tablet?

Xovoltib belongs to the group of medications called antineoplastics, or anti-cancer medications. Xovoltib, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, contains Afatinib Dimaleate as an active ingredient. What is the use of Xovoltib Afatinib Tablets?

Afatinib (Xovoltib) is an oral tablet used used to treat a certain type of lung cancer (non-small cell lung cancer) that has spread to other parts of the body. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma are all subtypes of NSCLC. It usually grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer.

How Does Afatinib 50 mg Tablets Work?

Afatinib belongs to the class of medications called protein kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the function of two closely related proteins, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). These receptors allow a protein called epidermal growth factor (EGF) to attach to the cells. When the epidermal growth factor attaches to the receptor, it activates an enzyme in the cell called tyrosine kinase. This enzyme triggers chemical processes inside the cancer cells that make the cells grow and multiply. Afatinib (Xovoltib) stops the EGF from activating them and, as a result, stops the cancer cells from growing and multiplying.
